Any of you come back to your Connie after knee surgery?
I am going in for two total knee replacements 1/20/10 and am wondering how long it is going to be before I can return to riding with out risking doing serious damage to my new knees.

If it is going to be more than a year+ I need to think about long term storage.

I'd say that's a question best left for a doctor to decide for you.  Given the propensity for us ZG Drivers to try to keep it upright in all types of weather, I have a feeling some of us would injure ourselves more trying to keep her upright.

Now, that said, YOU will be the person to judge when you're ready, within reason. If it feels like you shouldn't be on a bike....well, you probably shouldn't. Remember, we Connie riders heal a bit slower physically than we do mentally.  Must be an age thing.

Now, that said x2....I've ridden with a broken ankle, ridden 2 months before I was supposed to after a seperated shoulder/collar bone surgery.  Much to the dismay of everyone involved, I might add.  But, as above: Remember, we Connie riders heal a bit slower physically than we do mentally.  Must be an age thing.

Clif Notes....pay attention to the doctor, pay attention to your body.  both will give you signs if you're ready or not.

I had me right knee replacement about 2 yesrs ago.  Was back on the bike in about 4 months. The key is you you take to your pt.  You have to push your self as hard as you can then harder. The harder you work out the faster your recovery. the guy who had his surgury the same day as I did is still in a walker after 2 years. It hurt too much so he didn't want to do it. Take pain meds befor your work out.

Charile:

Just an item of curosity, you can answer private if you so choose, but the question is 'why' are you getting this surgery?  Now my reason for asking is that I too have knee problems.  I know it is arthritis, but not sure of which type.  Some days I can walk pretty easily, some days not.

I had my left knee smashed up in an accident. For me, it required foot peg lowers. The key is to make sure your Doc know what you want - eg ride my motorcycle. Then do your physical therapy religiously and make sure the therapist knows what you want.

My leg was very limited after the bones healed. I told the Doc not good enough. After a lecture about dangers of motorcycles he figured out surgery to make it bend - still not 100% but good enough.

Charley,
I had my 2nd total knee replacement done 5 years ago and to tell the truth it took a long time before I felt comfortable enough to support a motorcycle on that leg.
I too went over and above when it came to my PT and was able to return to my pretty physical job in three month's time(at light duty was another three till full release),But both of my replacements was on the same knee I can't imagine having both done at the same time.
Good luck with your surgery,Do what the Doctors and people at PT tell you to do and you'll be back on that bike soon enough!
In my case it took me a full year before I was confident enough to even climb on the bikes, and another year to stop favoring that leg!
Right now I have a 09 concours which I have no problems supporting with that leg, in fact I have no problems at all with my new knee now!I'm able to run on it,ride my dirt bike,(doctor would shoot me if he saw me)and it
feels better than my real knee.
But like it's been said it's all up to the individual.
My best advise is to take your time don't rush yourself and you'll know when your ready but in the meantime plan on storing the bike for a while.

Charley......
What man, just one surgery?
I have been so lucky in my life, that I have had the wonderful opportunity to recover from 6 knee surgeries to continue to ride.
Left knee x4 right x2. Never had any problems unless I was trying to do things before the strength is back. The strength has always been my concern. And consider this also, if you lay her down in a parking lot, are you strong enough to get her back up?
So my suggestion, do the PT and get the strength back, hopefully you will be good to go.
Good luck.
Ride safe all.
Greg

Thanks for the input,
I am three weeks out of surgery, the only complication was a blood clot in my left leg, thankfully I was still in the hospital when it occurred.
Today I am walking around the house with no walker, (still on my meds) and able to flex each knee to 90 degrees. Working on more flexibility seems the key to to future success.
I am able to walk with a cane about 1/2 mile.
Good to hear from you that got back to riding after knee surgery.
Looking forward to riding this summer.

the reason for my surgery is that I have put it off for so long and right now I have good medical.
My situation is that I have  been wearing knee braces and doing lots of Aleve for the last three years. I was severely bow legged (not anymore!!) and really had no cartilage left on the inside of either knee do to the bad geometry of bowed legs.

It had gotten to the place that I could not bear to carry a 35 lb bag of dog food because of the extra load on my knees, had to pull myself up out of chairs.

now, three weeks after surgery I am in so much less pain. Still have swollen knees being iced down several hours daily but can see things are going to be much better. Much better.
